In the steady shift towards low-emissions motoring, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) has been a runaway success, establishing itself as the UK’s number-one selling PHEV. From this week an upgraded version of the Outlander PHEV can be viewed at Glyn Hopkin Mitsubishi Colchester, and the dealership has already begun taking orders from customers eager to save on running costs, as well as do their bit for the environment.
The Outlander PHEV combines electric and internal-combustion petrol technology to return a staggering official combined economy figure of 156.9 mpg from its 2.0 litre 16-valve engine. The internal combustion engine is supported by twin electric motors, able to achieve an electric-only range of up to 32 miles and supporting the petrol engine in combined mode to produce just 42 g/km CO2 with a range of 541 miles. It can also reach 0-62 mph in 11 seconds, increasing to a top speed of 106mph.
Not only can the new Outlander PHEV save customers hundreds in potential fuel savings, it also offers huge reductions in company car costs with no worries about range. The 2016 Outlander PHEV qualifies for a BIK tax rate of just 5%, a government ‘encouragement’ subsidy of £5,000 for ULEVs (Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicles) and is exempt from road tax and London’s congestion charge. As a result, Mitsubishi’s remarkable Outlander PHEV has found favour with private and company buyers alike.
When driving, in pure-electric mode the Outlander PHEV is equipped with an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, which chimes under 22 mph to warn pedestrians that it’s gliding by. Otherwise, the Outlander drives like a normal SUV, only with the instant torque response that comes with electric power.
The Outlander PHEV also guarantees real off-road ability with Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) permanent 4WD system, a lock mode for extreme conditions and a towing capacity of 1,500kg.
Inside, the Outlander PHEV is the most opulent Mitsubishi ever. The entry-level GX3h has an automatic gearbox, keyless entry, cruise control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and dual-zone climate control for the ultimate in driver comfort. The new GX3h+ adds smartphone control, an electric pre-heater and heated front seats, while the top-end GX4h specification introduces premium leather seats and a heated steering wheel, plus an upgraded satnav / DAB audio system and 360-degree ‘birds eye’ rear camera system.
Fraser Cohen, Managing Director of Glyn Hopkin, said: “As we’ve seen from its huge popularity so far, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a fantastic car, and the 2016 version represents another step in the right direction for ultra-low emissions vehicles in the UK.”
Cohen added: “With the government offering a number of tax breaks for alternative fuel cars, Glyn Hopkin’s range of attractive finance packages for new and pre-owned Outlander PHEVs means that our customers stand to save a great deal of money on an excellent car with a small carbon footprint.”
The new Outlander PHEV recently gained global attention when the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, visited Mitsubishi headquarters in Tokyo for a test drive. After recent announcements of a £65m investment in an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone for London transport, Mr Johnson seized the opportunity to experience the Outlander PHEV, praising its “unbelievably smooth ride and handling."
