Nissan Qashqai to be launched with Autonomous ‘Piloted Drive’

The award-winning Nissan Qashqai crossover will be the first Nissan vehicle in Europe to feature autonomous ‘Piloted Drive’ technology which will be launched in Europe next year.

Produced at Nissan’s flagship manufacturing plant in Sunderland, UK, the enhanced Qashqai will be equipped with ‘Piloted Drive 1.0’ feature that allows cars to drive autonomously and safely in a single lane in heavy traffic conditions on motorways.

To ensure that the system anticipates its surroundings correctly the feature has gone through vigorous testing with multiple sensors present on the car.

Looking to the future, Nissan plan in the next four years to launch vehicles with increased autonomous capabilities such as ‘multiple-lane control’, which can autonomously negotiate hazards and change lanes during motorway driving. By the end of the decade, Nissan will introduce ‘inner-city’ autonomy, which will enable vehicles to negotiate city cross-roads ad intersections without driver intervention.

Making the announcement at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Paul Wilcox, Chairman, Nissan Europe said: “The Nissan Qashqai has always been a trailblazer in the market so it’s fitting that customers will get to experience the future of mobility in our award-winning crossover as early as 2017. It’s a car that people love and trust. It pioneered the crossover boom, and now it will spearhead Nissan’s move towards launching a range of vehicles with autonomous drive capabilities.”

Since its production began in 2014 the Nissan Qashqai has been a real success story. In September 2015 the latest generation Qashqai became the fastest ever UK-built vehicle to smash the half million production mark and since its production began a new Qashqai has rolled off the production line ever 62 seconds!
