The MG4 EV Urban has strengthened its appeal after winning a recent What Car? test against the Renault 5 and Hyundai Inster. With competitive pricing, family-friendly space, up to 258 miles of WLTP range and strong standard equipment, it stands out as a practical electric hatchback for commuters, families and first-time EV buyers.
The small EV market is crowded, but the MG4 EV Urban impressed where it matters most: practicality, value, range and everyday usability. Glyn Hopkin positions it as an accessible route into EV ownership, while What Car? rates it as a roomy, well-priced, family-friendly option.
Designed for daily use, the MG4 EV Urban combines compact hatchback proportions with family-friendly space and three versions: Comfort Standard Range, Comfort Long Range and Premium Long Range. The range starts with a 43kWh battery and up to 201 miles WLTP, while the 54kWh Long Range versions offer up to 258 miles WLTP.
Selected versions offer up to 258 miles WLTP, giving the MG4 EV Urban the range to cover commuting, school runs and longer weekend journeys with confidence. Glyn Hopkin’s What Car?-based write-up also says the Long Range model returned 207 miles in real-world testing.
Standard equipment includes a 12.8-inch HD touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus MG Pilot driver assistance systems. Premium Long Range adds features such as heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging and a 360-degree camera.
Although it is positioned as an urban EV, the MG4 EV Urban is also built for family use, with seating for five, folding rear seats and strong everyday storage. What Car? says it is far roomier inside than similarly priced rivals and fitted eight carry-on cases below the parcel shelf, compared with four in the Renault 5 and three in the Hyundai Inster.
Every new MG4 EV Urban is backed by MG’s seven-year warranty, adding reassurance for drivers moving into electric motoring. What Car? also lists the car’s seven-year warranty and five-star Euro NCAP rating among its key strengths, while Euro NCAP rates the MG4 EV Urban at five stars; the Hyundai Inster and Renault 5 are both four-star cars.
