The UK Government’s Electric Car Grant is designed to make switching to electric more affordable by reducing the upfront cost of selected new zero-emission cars. If your chosen vehicle is eligible, the grant is applied as a discount at the point of purchase, so there is no separate customer application form to complete.
Eligible electric cars are currently split into two grant bands. Band 1 cars can receive up to £3,750, while Band 2 cars can receive up to £1,500. At Glyn Hopkin, our team can help you check which models currently qualify, confirm the latest grant banding and explain the savings available before you order.
To qualify, the car must meet the UK Government’s eligibility criteria. This includes being a new M1 passenger vehicle, producing 0g CO₂/km at the tailpipe, offering a minimum battery range of 100 miles, meeting required vehicle and battery warranty standards, satisfying sustainability requirements and falling within the relevant pricing rules.
You do not need to apply directly to the government. If your chosen model and derivative are eligible, Glyn Hopkin will confirm the discount, show it clearly on your quotation and handle the dealer-side process for you.
The Electric Car Grant helps lower the initial cost of selected EVs, while electric driving can also offer lower running costs, zero tailpipe emissions and a smoother, quieter drive. Whether you are buying your first electric car or upgrading to a newer EV, Glyn Hopkin is here to help you compare eligible models and make the switch with confidence.

What is the Electric Car Grant?
It is a UK government discount for selected new electric cars. Current official banding is up to £3,750 for Band 1 vehicles and up to £1,500 for Band 2 vehicles.
Do I need to fill in a government application form myself?
No. GOV.UK guidance says consumers pay the discounted price automatically, while dealers and manufacturers handle the grant portal process.
Can I get the grant on a hybrid or plug-in hybrid?
Not under the car scheme. The official car grant rules require 0g CO2/km at the tailpipe, which means the ECG is for qualifying zero-emission battery-electric passenger cars rather than hybrids or plug-in hybrids.
Do all trims of an eligible model qualify?
Not always. Government guidance says eligibility depends on pricing rules and can be determined by distinct powertrain variants. That is why model-level pages should always say “subject to derivative eligibility” where a range includes multiple battery sizes or trims.
Can businesses and lease customers use the grant?
Yes. GOV.UK portal guidance says the discount is available to private individuals and businesses buying or leasing an eligible vehicle directly from a dealership or manufacturer.
What about a home charger?
The ECG is separate from chargepoint support. GOV.UK currently lists chargepoint grants of up to £500 for renters and flat owners with private off-street parking, up to £500 for some households with on-street parking solutions, and up to £500 per socket under the Workplace Charging Scheme.
How often does the eligible-car list change?
There is no single published timetable. Manufacturers must apply, vehicles must be approved in writing, and dealers then process eligible orders through the portal. In practice, the safest approach is to check the live GOV.UK list before publishing specific model or grant promises.
