Nissan EV Owners Surpass Three Billion Electric Miles in the UK

Nissan is celebrating another major milestone in its electric vehicle journey, as owners of its electric cars and vans have now travelled more than three billion fully electric miles across the UK.

According to DVLA mileage data for electric Nissan models registered in the UK, drivers have collectively covered an impressive 3,027,603,142 miles. That is the equivalent of travelling to the Moon and back more than 6,000 times—or completing the journey from Sunderland to Tokyo over 340,000 times.

The achievement arrives as Nissan marks 15 years of continuous electric vehicle sales in the UK, highlighting the brand’s longstanding role in making electric driving more accessible.

Fifteen Years of Electric Innovation

Nissan’s UK electric journey began when the first-generation Nissan LEAF went on sale in 2011. As one of the first affordable, mass-produced electric cars, the LEAF helped introduce fully electric driving to a much wider audience.

Production of the LEAF began at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in 2013, before the e-NV200 electric van joined the range in 2014 and demonstrated how businesses could also benefit from zero-tailpipe-emission motoring.

A second-generation Nissan LEAF arrived in 2018, introducing updated technology, improved range and a more contemporary design. Nissan then expanded its electric passenger car range further with the launch of the ARIYA in 2022.

A New Generation of Nissan Electric Cars

The Nissan electric range has continued to grow, with the fully electric MICRA bringing the familiar nameplate into a new era of compact electric motoring.

In 2026, Nissan introduced the third-generation LEAF—the most advanced, spacious and efficient version of the model to date. It also became the first mainstream electric vehicle from a major manufacturer to be produced across three separate generations.

The latest LEAF has already received significant industry recognition, including being named Auto Express Car of the Year 2026.

All three generations of the Nissan LEAF have been produced at the brand’s Sunderland plant. The latest model will eventually be joined by an all-electric Nissan Juke as part of Nissan’s EV36Zero strategy.

This strategy brings electric vehicle manufacturing, battery production and renewable energy together in Sunderland. The plant uses energy generated on-site from wind and solar power, while battery packs are produced nearby at Nissan partner AESC’s gigafactory. Today, Nissan’s electric range includes passenger cars such as the MICRA, LEAF and ARIYA, alongside electric commercial vehicles including the Townstar and Interstar.
