Are MG Cars Reliable? Warranty, Ratings and Awards

Reliability is one of the biggest considerations when choosing a new car. Attractive styling and clever technology are important, but buyers also need a vehicle they can depend on every day.

So, are MG cars reliable? The most accurate answer is that results vary between individual models. However, MG’s improving survey scores, extensive warranty and growing collection of awards provide buyers with plenty of reassurance.

How Reliable Are MG Cars?

Independent reliability results show an improving picture. In the 2025 What Car? Reliability Survey, MG achieved a score of 88.9%—a significant increase from 76.9% the previous year. MG also covered 95% of the repair bills reported by owners.

Looking at individual models provides a more useful comparison. The MGS5 EV achieved an impressive 94.1% reliability rating, placing it ahead of electric alternatives including the Renault Megane E-Tech, Tesla Model 3 and Volkswagen ID.3 in the same survey.

The MG4 EV also scored 89.3%, ahead of the Volkswagen ID.3’s 87.7%. Meanwhile, the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid achieved 92.5%, matching the Toyota Yaris Hybrid’s reliability score.

No manufacturer can promise that every car will be completely fault-free, but these model-specific results demonstrate that several MG vehicles can compare competitively with established alternatives.

Seven Years of MG Warranty Protection

Every new MG is supported by a comprehensive seven-year or 80,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty, whichever comes first.

That provides four more years of standard protection than the three-year or 60,000-mile warranty available with many Volkswagen models. It also offers two additional years compared with Hyundai’s five-year warranty.

Kia provides the same seven-year duration with a higher 100,000-mile limit, MG’s seven-year warranty remains one of the strongest available with a new UK car.

The warranty provides valuable protection against qualifying manufacturing defects. Normal wear, maintenance and exclusions still apply, so owners should follow the recommended servicing schedule and read the full warranty conditions.

Award-Winning MG Cars

MG’s recent awards demonstrate that the brand is being recognised for more than competitive pricing.

The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid was named What Car? Plug-in Hybrid of the Year in both 2025 and 2026. It also won Affordable Hybrid Car of the Year at the 2026 Auto Express New Car Awards.

The MG3 Hybrid+ was crowned Affordable Hybrid of the Year at the 2025 Auto Express Awards, while the MG ZS Hybrid+ received the Best Hybrid Car title at the 2025 Carbuyer Awards.

The multi-award-winning MG4 EV has collected more than 30 major honours since its launch, including What Car? Small Electric Car of the Year in both 2023 and 2024. The MG4 XPOWER was also named Best Electric Hot Hatch.

Independent reviewers have rated several current models strongly too. Carwow has awarded the MG3 a score of 9/10, while the MG HS, MG4 EV and MGS5 EV have each received 8/10.

Should You Consider an MG?

MG’s overall reliability record is proven to be reliable and still developing, but several individual models have performed significantly well against established competitors.

Combine those results with a seven-year warranty, an extensive choice of vehicles and numerous industry awards, and MG presents a convincing option for drivers seeking value, modern technology and long-term ownership reassurance.
