Britain’s fastest snowboarder, Jamie Barrow, has broken the Guinness World Record for the fastest speed on a snowboard towed by a vehicle – with a little help from the Mitsubishi ASX.
The ASX was the perfect choice for Jamie’s “Adventure Advanced” and was fully supported by the Mitsubishi Motor team in the UK supplying him with a 2.2-litre ASX 4. The smart and efficient crossover was an integral part to the stunt which was successful thanks to the ASX’s four-wheel drive capability, Mitsubishi Active Stability Traction Control and its top five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Taking on the frozen lake of St. Moritz, Switzerland, safety and preparation were a major factor when planning the record attempt. The track was fenced off and piste bashers prepared the snow especially for the challenge.
Guinness World Record officials set strict criteria for the attempt which included completing a run in both directions with recording equipment to be set up at 100m apart by an official.
On the morning of Thursday 28th January, Jamie prepared for the stunt checking conditions which were not “ideal” with a track that was “bumpy” and snow that was “soft”. However, he felt comfortable on the warm up lap and was confident that he could beat the record – which he managed to do on his first attempt!
The very outrun was recorded at 100.840 Kph, but because the criteria for the Guinness World Record states two run in both directions has to be recorded, the return back was recorded at 98.901 Kph. With both of these runs averaged, the Guinness World Record speed totalled 99.871 Kph.
Speaking about his newly set Guinness World Record, Jamie said he was “ecstatic” about beating the record but that if weather and terrain conditions were better he could have “easily handled it a lot faster”.He also said he was looking forward to returning and attempting to beat his record but obviously only with the Mitsubishi ASX!
Steward Mckee, General Manager of Press, Public Affairs and Events and Mitsubishi Motors in the UK added: “We are delighted to be supporting Jamie in this way, and what he has achieved encapsulates Mitsubishi’s ASX ‘Adventure Advanced’ message.”
