MG4 Urban WhatCAR 5 STAR

MG4 EV Urban Tops What Car Triple Test

The all new MG4 EV Urban has been put to the test against two of the most talked about affordable electric cars on the market, the Renault 5 and the Hyundai Inster, and it has come out on top. In an independent two day evaluation by What Car?, covering everything from practicality and comfort to real world range and safety, the MG4 EV Urban was named the clear winner.

Why the MG4 EV Urban Won

What Car? highlighted several key areas where the MG4 EV Urban outperformed the competition.

Boot space was a standout. Where the Renault 5 managed four carry on cases below the parcel shelf and the Hyundai Inster managed three, the MG4 EV Urban fitted eight, six in the main boot area and two in the generous underfloor storage. For families, that kind of space makes a real difference.

Interior practicality also set the MG4 Urban apart. While taller passengers feel cramped in the rear of the Renault 5, the MG4 EV Urban offers significantly more legroom, a completely flat floor for the middle passenger and a level of rear space that rivals cars from a segment above. A large tray under the floating centre console, a cubby under the armrest and spacious door pockets add even more everyday storage.

Front and rear seat comfort impressed the testers, with good side support, long distance comfort and a higher seating position giving a confident view of the road ahead. The driving position offers plenty of adjustment, and even the entry level model comes with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera.

Interior quality was praised for exceeding expectations at this price point, with padded door armrests and stitched faux suede on the dashboard giving the cabin a more premium feel than the price tag might suggest.

Real world range and efficiency also stood up well against the competition. The Long Range model managed 207 miles on a single charge in real world testing, with an official WLTP range of up to 258 miles. Charging from 10 to 80% takes around 30 minutes.

Safety was another area where the MG4 EV Urban led the way. It is the only car of the three to achieve a five star Euro NCAP safety rating. Both the Renault 5 and Hyundai Inster scored four stars.
