When the new Jeep Renegade went on sale in February, it marked a number of firsts for the company. The Renegade is Jeep's first ever entry into the small SUV segment. It also becomes the first Fiat Chrysler Automobiles car to be jointly developed by Italian and American engineers and the first Jeep to be built in Europe but sold in the USA.
The firsts for the Renegade don't stop there either, as it becomes the first small SUV to be built with a nine-speed gearbox, the first in its segment to have a rear axle disconnect - and the first vehicle in its segment to have a seven-inch full colour multi-view display feature prominently in its instrument binnacle.
As it is a small SUV, the new Renegade must be compact enough to allow for excellent manoeuvrability in tight city centres, whilst also maintaining the best-in-class off-road performance that Jeep is famous for. It also must look rugged while still being functional and be versatile whilst looking stylish.
The Jeep Renegade does all of this, and more. The purposeful design features short overhangs, rugged body forms and aggressive wheel-to-body proportions that give provide a dominating on road stance. Despite the new up-to-date look, the Renegade is still instantly recognisable as a Jeep thanks to the signature seven-slot grille, large circular headlamps, trapezoidal wheel arches, beefy tyres and wide bumpers that Jeep has been famous for, for over seven decades.
The interior has been designed to be highly adaptable to ensure that the new Renegade meets a wide variety of customer needs – the perfect embodiment of comfort, quality, functionality and style, allowing it to be a viable option for everyone from young urban explorers, to large families.
It features a range of state-of-the-art, segment-leading technologies that are customisable to make life on-board as entertaining and comfortable as possible. Jeep's Uconnect system provides vehicle occupants with entertainment, navigation and communication features via a simplistic touchscreen display, or voice-activated control. The Uconnect system does everything from planning journey routes using satellite navigation, to playing your favourite songs from up to 2,000 digital radio stations.
Buyers of the Jeep Renegade will have the choice of two state-of-the-art sunroofs. The My Sky sunroof is unique-to-segment and consists of two removable panels that give the occupants a feeling of open air freedom that is completely unseen in this type of vehicle. The panels are easily stored in protective bags and kept safely in the lower part of the boot. There is also a large dual-pane electric sliding glass sunroof available.
The Renegade is available with a choice of six engines, three petrol and three diesels – each can be mated with a choice of four transmissions including the ground-breaking nine-speed automatic.
The diesel 1.6-litre version delivers 120hp at 3750rpm and 320Nm of torque whilst the 2.0-litre diesel will produce up to 170hp at 3750rpm and 350Nm of torque. Both engines adhere to the Euro6 emissions legislation, as do the two petrol variations – the 1.6-litre E-TorQ and the 1.4-litre MultiAir II that have a power output of 140 and 170hp respectively. All engines are fitted with Stop&Start technology for improved fuel economy.
With the Renegades primary use expected to be as a family car, a lot of work has gone into making sure that it is equipped with the latest safety and security features built in. The extensive list of safety features is seemingly endless, with features such as Lane Departure Warning Plus, Forward Collision Warning Plus, Electronic Stability Control, Electronic Rollover Mitigation, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control and ParkView rear reversing camera all as standard, plus much more.
Customers who buy the new Renegade will have an extensive range of after care products services available to them thanks to Mopar. With access to over 110 accessories that have been designed to blend seamlessly with the Renegades stylish design, customers really have the freedom to customise their vehicle however they want too - everything from stickers, mirror covers, front grilles, alloy wheels and roof racks is fully customisable with the Mopar aftercare package.
