Suzuki has unveiled a new enhanced hatchback for 2016 that offers a desirable combination of stylish design, spacious interior and new technologies with a central focus on weight reduction.

The Engine

The New Baleno will be the first Suzuki to be powered by the company’s new 1.0 BOOSTERJET direct-injection turbo engine which has 110bhp and 170 Nm of torque.

It sits alongside the familiar Dualjet 1.2 litre petrol engine with improved thermal efficiency, providing a perfect balance between power performance and fuel efficiency.

Both engines are offered with either a five-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission. In addition, a new mild hybrid has been confirmed with an Integrated Starter Generator with the 1.2 Dualjet which Suzuki claims will boost acceleration at low speeds.

The Exterior

Throughout, the car has inhabited a “Liquid Flow” design theme with a futuristic front end, curving lines and a sporty rear.

Exterior-wise the car will be available in 9 dark solid body colours along with 16-inch alloy wheels or 15 inch steel wheels. To add to the sporty look are Wraparound windows with blacked-out pillars and black sashes, as well outer weather strips and chrome door handles to provide greater elegance.

In addition, the New Baleno will have “Guide me light” headlamps which assist users in finding their way in the dark after leaving the vehicle or when unlocking the doors by remote control. High intensity discharge projector headlamps are also a standard feature.

Exterior Dimensions

Length3,995 MM
Width1,745 MM
Height 1,470 MM (1,460 MM with SHVS)
Wheelbase2,520 MM

Interior

Inside, the Baleno offers a modern dashboard unit with a new instrument cluster which features a large, high definition colour LCD display. Highlighted information includes driving G-force, engine output and torque, accelerator/brake option and energy (for vehicles with SHVS) along with others.

A seven-inch touchscreen panel enables the driver to connect an iPhone and enjoy many of Apple’s ‘Car Play’ features such as Maps, Phone, Messages, Music, Audiobooks and other compatible apps. The new model also includes a USB port and SD card slot and can also be connected to other smartphones using MirrorLink.

The common difficulty of achieving both a stylish design and spacious interior has been overcome by the new Suzuki Baleno by smart packaging. At the front, the seats feature an optimized shape and ample shoulder room providing improved comfort for both driver and passenger. The rear seats come with ample legroom and can be easily folded by a single action to provide extra luggage space. However, this extra legroom has not sacrificed any luggage space which boasts 355 litres.

Safety and Security

The Baleno offers a number of safety technologies to assist the driver. Distinictive among these is the Radar Brake Support (RBS) which uses wave rader to detect any vehicle that might be directly in front when travelling at a speed greater than approximately 3.1 mph. Upon detecting a potential collision, depending on the situation, the vehicle 1) alerts the driver, 2) increases braking force, or 3) applies the breaks.

Other safety features include ESP®*2, six SRS airbags and an impact absorbent body. Various components have also been designed to lessen injuries sustained by pedestrians in vehicle-to-person collisions.
