Factor 50 for you, factor 500 for your Nissan

With the hot weather we have had recently the advice from skincare specialists is to slap on the SPF 50 suncream to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. However, for a Nissan this is just not practical and the brand has revealed for the first time just how tough the UV protection is on its crossovers such as Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail. The answer is equivalent to Sun Protection Factor 500!

All new Nissan crossovers come with a high quality, multi-layer paint finish which has been tested extensively to endure the most extreme temperatures across the world. During development, Nissan’s engineers expose sample paint panels to 500 watts per square metre of UV light, which is more than 10 times the UV radiance of natural sunlight.

Key to stopping Nissan’s crossover’s peeling like your skin in the summer sun is the brand’s new £1.34 million environmental test chamber. This recently opened facility enables Nissan engineers to recreate many years of UV exposure in a matter of weeks with a mission to ensure all Nissan crossovers deliver a lifetime of quality performance.

The hi-tech light bulbs in the new chamber emit 92,000 watts of intense heat, which is equivalent to 2,300 of the 40-watt type found in many homes. Paired with increased temperature inside the chamber, the cabin of any crossover on test reaches an astounding 120 degrees Celsius. On the other end of the spectrum to ensure outstanding durability it can also drop to a shuddering minus 50 degrees Celsius.

As a result, it means Nissan Crossovers are both safe to soak up the summer sun in countries like France and Spain but can also be buried under metres of snow such as in the North of Finland and Norway.

Dean Gillet, an Environmental Test Engineer at Nissan said: “Just like human skin, car paint is affected by intense UV rays that are capable of breaking down a surface, so we test for durability to ensure long lasting product quality.”

He further went on to explain that it isn’t just the paint that’s tested but also all the plastics, seat fabrics and adhesives which go through the same process.
