Electric Vehicle enthusiasts complete 1,652-mile journey in a Nissan LEAF

Plug in Adventurers, Chris Ramsey and Jonathan Porterfield have just recently completed the epic 1,652-mile journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End and back again for completely free thanks to the all-electric Nissan LEAF.

The electric enthusiasts, both from Scotland, managed to complete the journey in two days using only publicly available electric vehicle (EV) charging points. Taking advantage of the UK’s growing charging network of more than 7,000 charging stations, the Nissan Leaf was ‘refuelled’ 33 times along the electric highway with each charge taking as little as half an hour.

The first leg of the journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End was completed in just 28 hours and 38 minutes which was quickly beaten on the return journey with a time of just 27 hours and 47 minutes.

Chris and Jonathon are both members of the EV enthusiast group Plug In Adventures and took on the challenge to emphasize the breadth and scale of charging infrastructure in the UK, as well as proving the capability and practicality of electric cars. Jonathan said he “regularly hears from drivers of diesel and petrol cars that say you can’t drive far in a Leaf’ and that by doing this journey they have ‘proved’ that you can.

Robert Tweedie, EV Manager, Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd added that what the duo has achieved was “pretty extreme” but provides “more proof of the capability, performance and reliability of the Nissan LEAF.

Many of the charging points that the pair visited were part of Ecotricity’s Electric Highway which is Europe’s largest rapid charger network. These chargers are completely free to use and are powered by renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity’s Electric Highway said that the journey “demonstrates the true capabilities of the Electric Highway network” which is “picking up pace”.

The Nissan LEAF is the best-selling pure electric vehicle with almost 200,000 on the road globally. Just recently, the new Nissan LEAD 30kWh debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show, delivering an impressive 115 miles on a single charge, 25% more than its predecessor.
